My mother, Charlotte Smallwood Gano, contracted polio in 1922 when she was two. She spent her sophomore and junior years of High School at the D.T. Watson Home in Pittsburgh under the care of Dr. Jonas Salk. At that time Watson Home housed and cared for many polio victims.
